Somerset Pennsylvania

Nestled quietly in the Laurel Highlands is the borough of Somerset, Pennsylvania. Its rural setting and average snowfall of 90 to 100 inches per year makes the area a playground for skiing, snowmobiling and other winter activities. Rich green foliage, abundant lakes and streams provides boating, fishing, hiking, and other recreational activities for year round enjoyment.

Somerset is as rich in history as it is in beauty. In 1794, Somerset was home to the Whiskey Rebellion, the first challenge to federal authority under the Constitution of the United States. United Airlines Flight 93, one of four planes hijacked by terrorists on September 11, 2001, crashed near Somerset in nearby Shanksville, placing the quiet community in the international spotlight. The community attracted international attention in 2002 when nine miners were rescued after being trapped in a coal mine in nearby Quecreek Mine for 77 hours. A crater on Mars is named after Somerset.

Walking through the historic district located in the middle of town offers an array of elegant buildings, each with its own distinctive architecture that begs to tell the story of years gone by. Little shops and quaint restaurants complete the story of a historic town bursting with life.

Somerset is just off Exit 110 of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-70 and I-76) and is a popular stopover place for travelers between Southwestern Ontario and American Midwest and Northeast Corridor.
